Download Kentucky oil and gas well location shapefiles and related datasets from the Kentucky Geological Survey.
The downloads below include GIS shapefiles and other datasets for Kentucky oil and gas wells. The well location shapefile contains data for over 160,000 well locations and is updated monthly. Use these data with your own GIS software or cloud services such as ArcGIS Online.
Kentucky Oil and Gas Well Location Shapefile
ShapefileShapefile of the most recent Kentucky oil and gas well locations from the KGS database. Data derived from the Kentucky Division of Oil and Gas permitting process. This is the same point oil and gas well data displayed on the KGS map services. Download is a .zip file containing the shapefile.

Kentucky Permitted Deviated Oil and Gas Traces
ShapefileShapefile of line traces and inflection points of non-vertical oil and gas wells in Kentucky that have been approved for permits since 2006. The layers in this service include both the line traces ("deviated well traces") and the inflection points ("deviated well points") along the traces. Data is updated weekly but there might not be a change in data from week-to-week. Check the metadata for number of records. Download is a .zip file containing the shapefiles.
Updated March 05, 2026. Contains 4,802 deviated well traces and 8,227 inflection points. Note: only deviated wells reviewed by KGS for permitting — not as-built lines.

KGS Oil and Gas Fields
ShapefileThe outlines of petroleum fields identified by KGS geologists. These outlines were digitized from the 1:250,000-scale oil and gas maps of Kentucky in 4 sheets. Scanned and georeferenced images of these maps are available on CD-ROM. Under provisions established by Homeland Security, natural gas storage fields are not shown. Download is a .zip file with shapefiles included.
