Data Use Policy

Data hosted on KGS websites (kygs.uky.edu, kgs.uky.edu, kgsrspace.uky.edu) and held in the UKnowledge Institutional Repository is collected and distributed by the Kentucky Geological Survey, the University of Kentucky, and affiliated organizations. Data is generally shared under a Creative Commons 4.0 Attribution license, unless otherwise indicated. This license does not restrict commercial use, creation of derivative works, or distribution, but it does require attribution.  

 

Basically, you must follow these rules:  

 
  1. Attribution to Kentucky Geological Survey is required.
  2. Attribution to University of Kentucky is required.
  3. Attribution to the author/creator/source of the work is required (if name is available).
  4. Only attributed use is allowed.
  5. If data is modified, this must be clearly indicated. 

 

We love to know how and when our resources are used, so feel free to email (kgsmail@uky.edu) and tell us about it. Our data has been used in research papers, presentation decks, conference posters, industry reports, and more. If your project requires a Data Use Agreement, please contact us directly for assistance. Uncredited use is prohibited without explicit permission from KGS.

Anyone using data from the Kentucky Geological Survey acknowledges that data is provided as is, without guarantees of completeness, accuracy, safety, or any other express or implied representation or purpose. Users are advised to hire a certified geologist for specific needs.
