Associated Organizations & Partners

The Kentucky Geological Survey collaborates with various organizations and institutions to advance geological research, education, and public service throughout the Commonwealth and beyond.

University of Kentucky Organizations

For nearly 50 years, the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) has been Kentucky’s home to energy innovation, materials science discoveries, and incubation of technologies that has helped Kentucky’s energy economy to thrive.

The Kentucky Water Research Institute (KWRI) was founded in 1964 as one of the 54 Water Resources Research Institutes established by the U.S. Congress through the Water Resources Research Act.  The institute receives annual base grant funding through the USGS Section 104b funding, which is awarded through a state-competitive process to Kentucky institutions of higher learning and administers the nationally competitive USGS 104g research program.  Additionally, KWRI has several extramurally funded research, education, and outreach programs.

Kentucky Organizations

The Kentucky Board of Registration for Professional Geologists oversees the practice of geology and registration process for Kentucky licensees. Its purpose is to enforce the licensure law in order to protect the consuming public. The KGS Director and State Geologist is an ex officio member of the board.
The purpose of GSK is to advance the profession, practice, and interest in the science of geology in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The society offers periodic geologic field trips and sponsors educational activities through the year. KGS staff serve as officers and assist with the conduct of society activities.

The Kentucky Association of Mitigation Managers (KAMM) was formed in 2004 to promote natural hazard mitigation and management in Kentucky. Our members represent local, state and federal officials, floodplain coordinators, planning and zoning officials, engineers, surveyors, GIS specialists, hydrologists, public safety and emergency managers.

The Kentucky Paleontological Society promotes interest in and knowledge of the science of paleontology. KPS offers regular seminars and fieldtrips focused on fossils. KGS facilitates KPS meetings and other activities.
The Kentucky Section of AIPG represents professional geologists in Kentucky and supports the profession by offering continuing education and engaging with student geologists. KGS staff often hold officer positions and facilitate many of the popular workshops.

The KyFromAbove initiative is focused on building and maintaining a current basemap for the Commonwealth that can meet the needs of its users at the state, federal, local, and regional level. A common basemap, including current color leaf-off aerial photography and elevation data (LiDAR), reduces the cost of developing GIS applications, promotes data sharing, and add efficiencies to many state agency business processes. All basemap data acquired through this effort is being made available in the public domain.

National Organizations

AGU is a global community supporting more than half a million advocates and professionals in the Earth and space sciences.

The Association of American State Geologists is comprised of the active state geologists of the 50 states and Puerto Rico. KGS participates in advocacy work through AASG to promote national programs that benefit all state surveys.

The Center for Land Surface Hazards (CLaSH) Catalyst confronts the challenge of understanding interconnections between hazards that can greatly magnify their effects.

ESIP is a home for Earth science data professionals. As a nonprofit funded by cooperative agreements with NASA, NOAA, and USGS, ESIP brings together interdisciplinary collaborations to share technical knowledge and engage with data users. KGS is a participant in ESIP events and opportunities.

GSA advances geoscience research and discovery, service to society, stewardship of Earth, and the geosciences profession. KGS staff are frequent meeting attendees, and serve as officers of the society.

Created by an act of Congress in 1879, the USGS provides science for a changing world, which reflects and responds to society’s continuously evolving needs. As the science arm of the Department of the Interior, the USGS brings an array of earth, water, biological, and mapping data and expertise to bear in support of decision-making on environmental, resource, and public safety issues.

International Organizations

OneGeology is an international initiative of the world's geological surveys and other international and regional geoscience organisations.

Its aim is to provide access to global geoscience data via web services underpinned by commonly used geodata standards. OneGeology promotes exchange of know-how and skills enabling all potential users to participate.
